A opening act is usually to warm up your audiences, a opening is usually before the main attraction so in this case the main attraction would be your very own Ventriloquist character or Ventriloquist act.

A closer or closing act is a special ending or a ending of the show or event. Usually a closer is the part of the show that leaves the audience with happyness or even a WOW.
