When I performed my storyteller Ventriloquist act at the public library when I was young and creative, I would use a trick or a gimmick for up close audiences, yes it's a illusion when being created but it's a trick or gimmick when in process.
Instead of me telling a story my Ventriloquist character wishes to tell a story, so I let my Ventriloquist character tell us a short story it's a sad story that make tears run from my eyes.
How is it done?
the Ventriloquist secretly have a cut up onion π§
in a handkerchief or bandana, the Ventriloquist place the handkerchief up to his /her nose as in to wipe or blow their nose and the Ventriloquist place the handkerchief or bandana up to their eyes as in to wipe them from tears as the Ventriloquist character tells his sad story the Ventriloquist becomes saddened and soon the Ventriloquist eyes become watery and the water should freely run down the Ventriloquist face.
Do not stop the water because you don't know how much water you are going to get so let it flow down from your eyes.
Any person that cooks using onions will tell you onions make your eyes watery, you might ask will the audience smell the onions in the handkerchief or bandana, the answer is this is a close up trick or gimmick but not that close so keep that in mind, try to hide the scent of the onion with perfume or cologne or put it away quickly in a small closed box after producing the tears.
Note: practice and rehearsal and experimenting are suggested before performing this trick/gimmick/illusion.
